Computer Science is FOUNDATIONAL

What is Computer Science?

Vision

All Hawaii State Department of Education students will graduate with foundational Computer Science knowledge and skills to thrive in our increasingly digital world.

Mission

To provide equitable access to high quality Computer Science education to all preK-12 students within the Hawaii State Department of Education.

As the foundation for all computing, computer science is “the study of computers and algorithmic processes, including their principles, their hardware and software designs, their applications, and their impact on society” (Tucker et. al, 2006, p. 2).

CS Standards and Practices

CS Core Concepts Graphic

Standards

The core concepts of the framework represent major content areas in the field of Computer Science.

CS Core Practices Graphic

Practices

The seven core practices of Computer Science describe the behaviors and ways of thinking that computationally literate students use to fully engage in today’s data-rich and interconnected world.

Equity in Computer Science

Equity and diversity in Computer Science bring innovative solutions far more quickly and with greater relevance to our diverse population.  The number of schools offering CS as a foundational subject is critical to the nation’s economy and security. In 2022 Hawaii averaged 2,589 open computing jobs each month.  These jobs have a salary of $83,548.  Yet, there were only 154 graduates in CS in 2019.
